The most beautiful music in the world is the sound of children laughing

Carl Hughes, on Kennywood's Kiddieland

Early Days to Executive Heights

Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1921, Carl began his professional life as a sportswriter for The Pittsburgh Press. His first connection to Kennywood came through helping a friend with press releases. Following military service in the Philippines during WWII, Carl returned home and continued juggling his journalism job with part-time publicity work at Kennywood. By 1956, he joined the park full-time.

Just a few years later, Carl Henninger suffered a heart attack and the park was in need of a leader. Hughes was appointed park manager. From that moment on, Kennywood would never be the same.

Architect of a National Treasure

Under Carl’s stewardship, Kennywood earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987—the first amusement park in America to do so. His tireless pursuit of excellence and attention to detail elevated the park from “average” to aspirational. He saw the park not just as a collection of rides, but as an immersive experience in beauty, nostalgia, and family connection.

He worked six to seven days a week, often ending his day by personally thanking a staff member for their service. His leadership was defined by humility, warmth, and a deep respect for everyone who made the Kennywood experience magical.

Industry Leader and Legacy Maker

Carl Hughes was not only a champion for Kennywood—he was also a pioneer in the global amusement industry. As the first living inductee into the IAAPA Hall of Fame, his contributions were credited with transforming the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions from a social club into a respected international trade and idea-sharing organization.

His beloved slogan for Kiddieland—“The most beautiful music in the world is the sound of children laughing”—continues to capture the heart of Kennywood’s mission.

A Life That Touched Millions

Carl Hughes passed away in 2012 at the age of 91, leaving behind a beloved family and a legacy still felt in every corner of the park he helped elevate. To this day, generations of guests ride, laugh, and make memories in the park Carl built with vision, integrity, and joy.
